Change Essay

Changes in our lives may not always make it better or bad, but id depends on what changes one is going through.
I've moved out of Korea, my home, when I was three years old. I didn't know where we were going but we knew it was going to be different. We would have to change and adopt and get used to the different culture. Having arrived at England we started to all learn English. This change was extremely difficult for our whole family. After all these years only knowing one language we had to master another. We all had a change in friends and the food that we consumed. It surely made my mom pleased to know food was prepared and easily and quickly. but the sudden change in friends wasn't all that easy. The first problem being the language and the second being that we have different cultures. All these changes we've gone through in England has been hard, but has prepared me for a good future. Many hard changes will result in good lessons in the future.
As I have been growing up, I was able to see the massive and rapid changes. Especially the growing technology. I remember our very first computer. A Macintosh, it was very hard to run programs but still using more and advanced technology, everyones lives have changed. But seeing many advantages to this change, more disadvantages arise. With having computers, people put back accounts, personal information, basically their whole life in it. Of course everything would have been perfect if there weren't hackers, viruses and thieves. From making a computer, a person's life so much easier it really doesn't work in their favor when something is stolen. By looking at so many other different technological aspects of life, we humans are getting lazier and are missing out on a lot of old school ways.
Yes, changes that make life easier cannot necessarily make them better, but in many ways it makes it harder and for them to do it. It could make it harder in many different cases for a person by making a change that's easier in life.

Breaking Benjamin

Sum 41, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Led Zeppelin, Goo Goo Dolls, Incubus, etc.
These are commonly and popularly known alternative rock bands that have had songs in the top 10 list. Breaking Benjamin has been around from 1998-present. They also play alternative rock and post-grunge originated from Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. The members include Benjamin Burnley(the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist), Aaron Fink(the lead guitarist), Mark Klepaski(the bassist), and Chad Szeliga(the drums and percussionist). Benjamin and Jeremy(a former member) started up the band at home finally ending up with the name, Breaking Benjamin. Benjamin had been covering a song for Nirvana when he broke the mic and the owner had said "Thanks Benjamin for breaking the mic." Hence the band changed their name to Breaking Benjamin.

The band has had successfully finished the three albums: "Saturate", "We Are Not Alone", and the most recent, "Phobia". "The Diary of Jane," the top rated song in all of their albums has quickly lost interest amongst the audience, unfortunately. Breaking Benjamin uses drums accompanied by the electric guitar in their intros or vice versa. Most of their songs have a slow but good melody that still attracts many ears. Movies("Step Up 2") and Games("Halo 2") using some of their songs as soundtracks fit perfectly. This gives them new customers. In the movie "Step Up 2", the song "The Diary of Jane" is used during a ballet lesson, where the teacher is instructing them to interpret through dancing. In the game "Halo 2," the song "Only the Strongest Will Survive" accompanies the player(s) entering a new level. As they have to fight off many alien creatures with a character called Masterchief. For some of their songs they have made acoustic versions, making the audience go back and listen to the song again. The songs have good rhythms and listeners are able to sing a long with the songs, the simple words that make the song easier to listen. This makes the lyrics to the songs more predictable in some cases, being an advantage and a disadvantage. The song names vary from "Fireflies" to "Evil Angel," with many feelings and descriptions in the songs. By not having too many songs in the top 10 list, Breaking Benjamin will bore listeners. But for the new ears, Breaking Benjamin is considered a good band. Breaking Benjamin still having a good reputation, many other bands and groups have taken over many of these popular bands, making the band Breaking Benjamin a shadow amongst all the tall figures.

TViolence and Vi(olent)deogames

Everyone loves to watch action movies like "Mission Impossible" or "Spiderman". Who wouldn't like playing games for stress relief? Being able to play and watch to entertain yourself, seems good for you. Is it? Does it really help a individual to play a FPS (first person shooter) or watching a gory movie?

Research results clearly show that watching television shows and playing video games that are violent, changes people. It changes people to be more violent and aggressive, even though some of the results said otherwise, like showing more aggression, bad thoughts, going into bad habits, and getting used to the fact of killing people. This may also depend on the person's maturity level. A small kid compared to an adult watching an R rated movie would have two totally different outcomes. The small kid would learn new information or parts of violence and would want to watch more. When the adult would know that it's only a movie and that in the real world its wrong. Being able to separate what is right and wrong will help, but not completely "cure" them. Watching violent vs. comedy movies don't have a difference. It will change the person no matter what. Violence is everywhere, in all the movies and in games. Without violence movies, just seem boring. Everyone is addicted to action in movies and being violent in life. By watching more and more, the scenes or games that we played and watched will affect how we act later on in our lives. But all TV shows or movies aren't bad, documentaries and nice, clean cartoons maybe a good choice. By watching these types of shows will significantly show changes in a person.

This has shown the same effect for video games as well. From one of my colleagues he said, "Yes, because I'm in that case." said Kwang. That was his answer to my question, "Do you think computer games make people more violent?". When another colleague said, "No, it's stress relief and plain fun!" says Weston. But what do we call fun now and what did we used to call fun before? By watching more TV and playing games, this has changed the meaning of fun for many people. Video games have more effect on people then any technology. The part of being able to control a character and massacre people will leave a permanent memory. I agree that it's good for entertainment and stress relief but again, all of those meanings of what is "fun" is actually harmful instead. But of course there are games that have been created to play sports only and racing. By leaning more toward those games it would be a good start in helping the people to change the way they think.

Watching TV and playing video games are fun, no doubt, but it definitely has it's disadvantages. Now having more games and movies/shows that show and encourage people to be more like what they see and play, it has truly changed our meaning of fun and what we are learning more. There's no good in watching violent TV shows or playing violent video games.

Advice from Uncle David

Dear Uncle David,

I like a guy at my school and he seems to like me, too. We do a lot of things together. Unfortunately, whenever we go somewhere, he doesn’t have much money so I have to pay for his Starbucks or McDonald’s. He said his parents don’t give him much of an allowance. I don’t mean to complain, but I don’t get much allowance, either. How can I get him to pay his fair share?

Dear Poor in Pendik,

I'm sorry that to say that either your "boyfriend" has been using you this whole time or he may be from a really poor family. If he seems to be a nice guy but you end up paying all the time, dump him. It will be hard for you to stop liking him, but there are so many other nice guys out there. If money is such a big barrier, do activities that don't require as much money. Go out for a picnic, download movies and watch it at your/his house, do something more social and productive, play board games. Be creative! There's so much more to life then going to Starbucks and movies.

Sincerely,
Uncle David

Dear Uncle David,

I have many close friends in my school. We all have unlocked lockers in our PE locker room. My friends feel quite comfortable to take things from my locker—my school uniform shirt, my coat, my deodorant—and use them. I don’t mind, but I wish they would put the things back where they found them. I have received two discipline slips because I cannot find my uniform shirt. What can I do to get them to respect my property and my need for “boundaries?”

Dear Frustrated in Ferikoy,

I understand what you are going through. It may have made more sense for me since our school was smaller, but in your case, when everyone in the locker room is there, tell them that they should ask before taking your property. Try to ask them how it would feel if you had taken something from their lockers without permission. You could start borrowing your friends clothes and stuff and see how they all like it.Slowly they will realize that they too don't like this and change. If not, I have ask your teachers or the school board to make lockers that have locks on them, since from doing all this now will be a terrible habit later on in life.

Sincerely,
Unlce David

Dear Uncle David,

I recently moved to Turkey. I feel isolated because there are few American families here, and I do not speak Turkish. I home-school my kids, so we don’t have many opportunities to meet other foreigners. It has been five months, and I still can't get over the culture shock. I spend my days cooped up with my kids, unable to do the simplest things. I can't seem to live up to my husband's expectations, and he has become quite critical. This is hurting our marriage. Please help me before I go crazy.

Dear Sufferer,

You are not alone. There are countless people suffering from this same problem. But all you need to know is that you need to get on with life. All this culture shock may be hard to get over, but you just need to grit your teeth and act on whatever you may need and help you. You might want to talk to your husband about what you are going through or else he'll be confused, putting your marriage more in danger. Try to be more outgoing, making more friends and finding people to talk about your problems. If you have told your husband, try to work with him to get over this together. Your husband may be right, so just try to listen what he's telling you and what you should be doing.

Facebook

I have Facebook, you have Facebook, we all have Facebook. Like Xanga or My Space, Facebook is very similar but is more improved and more addictive. By making myself an account two years ago, I’ve been able to see its advantages. Having friends adding me and me adding them, I was able to get in touch with my old friends from elementary school. Being able to be “friends” on Facebook allowed me to see where they currently lived and what school they are attending. By going further, I was able to learn their birthdays and if they are in a relationship or not. The ability to write on their walls and comment on pretty much everything your friend wrote has made it possible for us to have more topics to talk about. In addition to that, I was able to share pictures with others along with the notes I wrote. To share about your life to friends and have them commenting on it tends to bring back old good or bad memories. But of course in this generation there has to be more than friends and other ways to interact with them through internet. The other day I was able to play a jetpack game with one of my old friends that has now moved back to America. Right after the game I visited his profile and was able to watch video clips he had uploaded. On the other hand, all of these can lead to a serious addiction. I’ve been spending a lot of time for the past few years spending more than 5 hours a day logged in. The ability to sit down and sometimes find out information is very addicting. Of course let’s not forget the fact that games and other applications can hold us down. I’ve added the football manager as one of them, creating my own team and playing other teams earning money and increasing player skills. This becomes very addictive. Facebook is user friendly in whatever you do on Facebook, which makes it even harder for people like me to just log off. The friends in my SAT prep class have experienced many of the same situations. “It helps connect with friends,” Dany said. “It’s just plain fun.” Mrs. said. But of course the disadvantages include it being time consuming. “It’s addictive,” Kwang S. said. “People don’t know when to stop,” Emily Y. said. After spending 3-5 hours on Facebook, I’ve realized. That unless you do what you were going to do in the first place, the rest is poison to you. But after all, these are my experiences. Go find out yourself! I guarantee you've be fascinated-and maybe even hooked!

2nd Essay

I agree mostly with the first saying that people acting on their fear being brave and facing it. The fact is fear comes back to you bite you from either bad experiences, if it's your first and new ones pop up.

Bad experiences always bring back fear for pretty much everyone. If you've failed and you're trying again, that memory of failing will come up again no matter how strong or weak you may be. The bad memories tend to have more long term stays than the good memories that have past and gone. It's not always the easiest thing to forget and go on. You just need to get over it by proving it to yourself and that fear will surely disappear.

The first time you try anything you are afraid that you might not do good and make a fool out of yourself. This is the easiest to overcome. You either will be good at it the first time and your fear will go away; but on the other hand, you will "suck" and try to be better at it. This is more of a short term fear that comes and goes.

Fear most of the time arises when you haven't experienced some aspects of life. When you find out you actually do fear from animals or events, sometimes we can just fear the random things around us but we usually don't fear. Fear of having another fear that may pop up and make you feel worse is another factor. Having to go through all that in order for fear to disappear may create new fears or bring back others.

We can't run from fear or ignore it. Everyone has something to fear about. No matter what it will come to you through experience first time doing things and new ones that pop up.

STUFFED!

Fighting for survival for decent brochures, pens and information on colleges.

26th September 2008, a shiny and great day for college fairs started at 1900 hours and ended at 2200 hours. Many students and IGA community members joined this grand fair partially because it was free that was put on by the Council of International Schools at the Hilton Hotel. To learn about universities, talk to college reps the minibus took them around the busy and narrow streets of Istanbul, Turkey. A lot of students gathered pens many forgetting to collect brochures, they had a great time.

“Overall it was a really neat experience to see possibilities for the future and enjoy the extravagant atmosphere of the Hilton”. Deirdre said.

But the IGA community members weren’t the only ones; there were an estimate of 600 to 700 students primarily from Turkish high schools. This fair has been held every fall at the Hilton Hotel giving many new and same students the opportunity to revisit or visit new colleges.

As Sarabeth said, “Hopefully this fair was used not only to supply us with many colorful pens, but to let us get just a glimpse of what could be.”

Gathering of the future decisions and college pens

Hungry Wolf Killed by Pork

Three helpless pigs and their homes were razed by a ravenous wolf.

5 year young pig brothers that lived on a peaceful field have been attacked by a 4 year young wolf. Investigators report that the wolf has been fasting and wasn’t able to hold his hunger.

Alfred and Bob the first of the three pig brothers have been terrified by the wolf huffing and puffing their straw and stick houses down. Chris the smartest of all pig brothers had luckily built a house of bricks saving the rest of his brothers from the ravenous wolf. Chris said, “I know I am the smartest in the family, I was just waiting for an opportunity like this in order to prove it to my other brothers. But I do feel for that hungry wolf, no one ever got to know what he was fasting for.”

After a tiring day of blowing homes down, Holmes the 4 year young wolf’s bones have been found in Chris’s caldron quite impossible to figure out the true identity of Holmes.

“I hope insurance would pay for the damage the wolf has caused but with AIG disappearing, I’ll have to live here. You’re welcome to come and taste our wonderful wolf soup, it’s delicious!” Alfred says.

“Oink!” Bob exclaims.
